Green light for $175m busway project

April 2009

Our Victoria Road project team, led by Michael Briggs and Andrew Grainger, has been in celebration mode following the State Government’s announcement of planning approval for the $175m Inner West Busway project through Drummoyne and Rozelle.

Manidis Roberts has been involved as a full partner in the alliance since the outset of the Victoria Road upgrade project, and our team’s recent focus has been on managing community relations and environmental planning, assessment and project management.

The project provides 3.5 kilometres of new, dedicated peak-hour bus lanes to deliver faster trips to and from the CBD along this busy commuting corridor.

Approval for the project was granted on 9 April, 2009, with 56 conditions to address many of the issues raised by the community and councils in the construction area.

The chief executive of the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) decided to proceed with the construction and operation of the project after considering issues raised in both the environmental assessment and Proposed construction of a bridge across navigable waters submissions report (April 2009).

As a result of community consultation, the Government has increased funding for the new bridge over Iron Cove, allowing for improvements to the design. These include realigning the piers of the new bridge to accommodate the local rowing course and providing new parking areas.

In announcing Government approval for the project, NSW Minister for Transport David Campbell said the new busway would improve peak-hour bus travel times by as much as 18 minutes.

“This will draw people out of their cars, thereby reducing traffic congestion and cutting carbon emissions,” the minister said. “One bus can take up to 50 cars off the Victoria Road corridor. Thirty-five thousand people travel on buses along Victoria Road each day and we want to see this increase and the number of people in cars decrease.”
